Manchester City embarked on an auspicious journey in the Champions League, carving out a sterling record that placed them among the prestigious quartet of unbeaten teams—Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, and Bayern Munich—in the group stage. The Citizens initiated their campaign with astounding victories in the first three bouts, amassing an aggregate score of 10-1.
Their most resounding triumph came in the form of a 5-0 trouncing of Copenhagen, which was arguably their best performance. In contrast, Borussia Dortmund posed the most formidable challenge, pushing City to overturn an initial deficit and secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Despite such an impressive onset, the second round of fixtures presented a hurdle, particularly in terms of maintaining their prolific goal-scoring streak. City’s offense stuttered, culminating in two consecutive goalless draws against Copenhagen and Dortmund. Yet, this minor slump did not cast a shadow on their overall dominance throughout the campaign. With fourteen points in the bag, alongside a net score of fourteen goals and a miserly concession of only two, there was no doubt about the group’s superior force.
Consequently, they earned a decisive march into the knockout phase, clinched the group’s top spot, while Dortmund followed in second place.
Champions League 2023 Manchester City – Round of Sixteen
Leipzig 1 – 1 Manchester City
Manchester City 7 – 0 Leipzig
Pep Guardiola’s brigade embarked on the knockout stage with an impressive display, despite only managing a 1-1 stalemate against the German side. Riyad Mahrez found the net in the 27th minute, but Josko Gvardiol retaliated with an equaliser in the 70th minute, thus setting the stage for a nail-biting second leg at the Etihad.
The 7-0 scoreline hardly encapsulates the tense and closely contested tie, particularly in the first half. The match saw a decisive turning point when a VAR-awarded penalty seemingly shattered the Germans’ morale. Erling Haaland made no mistake from the spot in the 22nd minute, and Leipzig barely had time to regroup before succumbing to another goal merely two minutes later.
The Norwegian powerhouse went on to amass an impressive tally of five goals in the match, while teammates Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne contributed a goal each. This collective effort ensured City’s triumphant progression to the next stage with a remarkable aggregate score of 8-1.
Champions League 2023 Manchester City – Quarter Finals
Manchester City 3 – 0 Bayern
Bayern 1 – 1 Manchester City
The quarterfinals were marked more by Bayern Munich’s calamity than by Manchester City’s prowess. The Bayern board’s decision to appoint Thomas Tuchel as a replacement for Julian Nagelsmann, mere days before the quarterfinals could be considered regrettable.
Nagelsmann had demonstrated his tactical brilliance against Paris Saint-Germain, leading his team to a convincing 3-0 victory across both legs. The innovative 35-year-old manager had successfully instilled a flexible system within the squad, shifting formations mid-match—a tactical prowess that could have posed a significant challenge for Manchester City to dismantle.
Tuchel, having been away from the managerial role since his dismissal from Chelsea, found himself thrust back into the limelight with the German champions and immediately faced off against the very man he had triumphed over in the 2021 Champions League final. His tenure, however, got off to a rough start. The Bavarians suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat at the Etihad in the first leg, with the players seemingly unable to grasp their new manager’s strategy.
In the second leg, a Haaland strike in the 57th minute set Bayern trailing, though captain Joshua Kimmich responded with a penalty kick. The internal conflict between Sadio Mane and Leroy Sane further illustrated a disjointed unit up against a formidable opponent—one of the competition’s most disciplined and focused sides.

Champions League 2023 Manchester City – Semi-Finals
Real Madrid 1 – 1 Manchester City
Manchester City 4 – 0 Real Madrid
While Bayern Munich’s internal turmoil served as a gateway for Manchester City’s quarterfinal victory, the semi-finals saw City’s inherent brilliance on full display. The strategic genius of manager Pep Guardiola, coupled with the exceptional performance of the players, transformed City into a footballing juggernaut. Against Real Madrid, renowned as one of the world’s premier clubs, the reigning Champions League champions and the team with the most titles to its name, City made them appear like a non-league squad.
In the initial leg, the competitiveness was on show, with the Citizens demonstrating their strategic intent in fleeting moments. However, with the away crowd feverishly voicing their support and creating an intimidating atmosphere, they ultimately settled for a 1-1 draw. Madrid drew first blood with a spectacular strike from Vinicius Junior, but De Bruyne quickly neutralised the advantage, quieting Santiago Bernabeu with a long-range shot.
Back on home turf at the Etihad, Manchester City exerted dominance through commanding possession, particularly within the initial thirty minutes. This tactical supremacy was an agonising spectacle for the visiting fans, and the relentless pressure bore fruit in the 23rd minute. Bernardo Silva spearheaded City’s offensive assault with two goals in the first half, during which Carlo Ancelotti surprisingly refrained from any tactical shifts, particularly in the midfield. Veteran players Toni Kroos and Luka Modric struggled to maintain the required pressing intensity against City’s relentless attack.
City’s offensive onslaught culminated in a resounding 4-0 victory, enabling the English side to advance to the finals with an impressive 5-1 aggregate scoreline.

The Road to Turkey: Inter Milan
Inter started their Champions League campaign in Group C which was called the ‘Group of Death’ as it contained Germany’s Bayern Munich, Spain’s Barcelona and Czech side Viktoria Plzeň.

Inter Milan | 4 – 0 | Plzen |
Bayern | 2 – 0 | Inter Milan |
The Group C of the Champions League was the group of death, featuring Bayern and Barcelona as the favourites to proceed and Inter Milan and Plzen as the punching bags. The Italians lost both legs to Bayern by a 2 – 0 scoreline in both encounters but beat Plzen home and away by an aggregate score of 6 – 0.
The game-changing encounter to their tournament was the two-leg tie against Barcelona, played in quick succession first at the San Siro. The home side scored the game’s only goal late in the first half through Hakan Calhanoglu to take a massive three points.
The return leg presented the group’s most exciting match, producing six goals but no winner. Barcelona scored first through Ousmane Dembele before Nicollo Barella equalised, and Lautaro Martinez gave them the lead. The Catalans drew level through Robert Lewandowski scored in the eighty-second minute, but Robin Gosen gave the Italians the lead for the second time in the game. Lewandowski then ensured they both shared the spoils, and it was an advantage for Inter Milan, who proceeded as the group’s runners-up with ten points behind the perfect Bayern, who won all their games.
Champions League 2023 Inter Milan – Round of Sixteen
Inter Milan 1 – 0 Porto
Porto 0 – 0 Inter Milan
Even though Inter Milan had been widely acknowledged as the favourites leading up to the match and enjoyed home ground advantage, the contest was heated and fiercely balanced, with both sides producing a commendable number of scoring opportunities. The game’s tide was turned dramatically in the seventy-eighth minute when Otavio, the shining star from Portugal, was shown a red card.
In a moment of pure theatre, Romelu Lukaku, rising from the bench, seized this golden opportunity to strike the pivotal goal against a diminished opposition. This decisive blow shattered Deagoe’s formidable twenty-two-match unbeaten streak. The single goal was sufficient to catapult the Nerazzurri into the quarterfinals, as they maintained their composure and cohesion throughout the second leg, edging past their opponents with a 1-0 aggregate score.
As we will further explore in this article, Inter Milan’s victorious journey through the competition stages was anchored on the strength of their impenetrable defense, which played a pivotal role in their success.
Champions League 2023 Inter Milan – Quarter Finals
Benfica 0 – 2 Inter Milan
Inter Milan 3 – 3 Benfica
For the first time since 2011, the Nerazzurri proudly strode into the Champions League quarterfinals and swiftly cemented their place in the semi-finals. Their journey was propelled by an exemplary first-leg performance on foreign soil, where they bested the Portuguese contingent 2-0, courtesy of stellar goals from Nicolo Barella and Romelu Lukaku. This victory ensured a significant advantage as they returned to their home turf at San Siro.
Subsequently, however, they found themselves entangled in a high-scoring, exhilarating deadlock, a six-goal spectacle that ultimately declared no victor. Although the final scoreline may not reflect it, Milan dominated the proceedings, briefly losing their concentration in the closing moments, thereby conceding a 3-1 lead to a relentless Benfica. Nevertheless, the foundation of their success had already been firmly established on their home ground.
Despite a belated surge from the visitors, who netted two goals in the eighty-sixth minute and during stoppage time, it proved to be too little too late. Inter Milan smoothly navigated the tumult, thus confirming their spot in the Milan semi-finals.
Champions League 2023 Inter Milan – Semi-Final
AC Milan 0 – 2 Inter Milan
Inter Milan 1 – 0 AC Milan
The Nerazzurri once more enjoyed a vibrant start in the first leg of the Champions League knockout stage, a trend that had marked their journey throughout the tournament. A rapid one-two punch delivered by Eden Dzeko in the eighth minute and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the eleventh minute swiftly claimed control of the semi-final. AC Milan gradually found their rhythm, but a string of key player injuries dampened their offensive prowess, leaving them unable to penetrate Inter’s formidable defence.

The tempo shifted dramatically in the second leg as AC Milan assumed command, sensing vulnerabilities in Inter’s defence and orchestrating a multitude of scoring opportunities. But, despite their renewed vigour, they lacked the decisive touch to topple their city rivals.
The proverbial nail in the coffin was hammered by Martinez in the seventy-fourth minute, exploiting AC Milan’s aggressive forward push, a desperate attempt to capitalise on their dominance. A decisive 3-0 aggregate score catapulted the Italian behemoth, the lone survivor from their nation, into the Champions League finals, bringing them within reach of the coveted trophy.

Analysing Guardiola’s Blues: Manchester City’s Tactics and Key Players for the 2023 FA Cup Final
In the Champions League, Manchester City have been impressive throughout the campaign. They, however, shifted their gears in the final stages and showed their ruthless side in their game against Real Madrid. Pep Guardiola has bottled some great chances in critical moments of the competition, occasionally accused of overthinking and overplaying scenarios. In the 2021 Champions League final against Chelsea, he altered his starting line-up, choosing to play without a central defensive midfielder. As a result, they were outrun in the midfield and lost by a solo Kai Havertz goal; we hope the lesson sinks in heading to the Turkey finals.
The recently crowned Premier League Champions gave their best-ever performance in the second leg semi-final against the most successful team in the competition, Real Madrid. Every play in Pep’s book worked with the inverted fullback; notably, John Stones teamed up with Rodri to block the passing lanes. Kyle Walker provided the pace in the back three, recovering when they were outrun on the counter-attacks, something they have fallen victim to too frequently in the Premier League. On the attack, a beast of a striker in Haaland and four creative players behind him stretching the field as much as possible to create spaces and displace the opposition’s defences has been a new strategy by Guardiola.
📊 Who had the 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 Premier League season out of these four? 🤔
2022/23 – Haaland: 36 goals, 8 assists
2013/14 – Suarez: 31 goals, 17 assists
2002/03 – Henry: 24 goals, 20 assists
2017/18 – Salah: 32 goals, 11 assists pic.twitter.com/UaiRrZ9FwC

Manchester City are our favourite in this tie, but that will have much to factor in if Guardiola can keep it in his pants, do the simple things right, and stick to his basics. They have one foot in the final if he can replicate the same performance, tactics, and line-up as in the Real Madrid game. However, we have seen them crumple more times in the critical stages of the Champions League; hope they get it right this time.
Manchester City Key Players
Bernardo Silva – A player close to being on the move away from the Etihad gave a performance of his career in the 4 – 0 win against Real Madrid. Two first-half goals gave his side the edge, with his tally of three goals in the competition not reflecting how impressive and influential he has been when called upon to perform either from the bench or in the starting line-up.

Kevin De Bruyne – The Belgian scored the most crucial goal against Real Madrid, keeping his team in the contest. One of the best players in the World will hopefully get the much-deserved recognition after being overlooked in recent years. With the maestro in the side, he has an eye to pick an assist from anywhere on the pitch and with Haaland, the recipient of his masterpiece, the Inter defence has to put a double shift to weather the attack.

Inter Milan: The Strategy and Star Player of Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League Final
The Italians have been overlooked against Manchester City, but they pose a silent threat and could have the ultimate power punch. Pep Guardiola’s genius tactics have started showing in the later stages of the season, but Inter Milan have been on top of their game throughout the campaign.
The Italians have been aggressive in their approach to games sealing all their victories in the knockout phase in the first leg. They boast the best defence in the Champions League, having kept eight clean sheets in the competition.
Inzaghi is devoted to a back five while defending and switches to a back three while attacking, with the wingbacks flying high to provide width while attacking. Their excellent defence record is built by shutting down the opposition’s attack through the centre with numbers in the middle, allowing spaces through the wings where they can’t hurt them. Their aerial dominance makes them confident to efficiently deal with any crosses thrown at them, as they did with AC Milan neutralising Oliver Giroud. They blocked all pathways for Brahim Diaz to operate in, and when they opted for crosses, it looked too easy for them. Haaland is an energetic and fierce threat in attack, and it would be exciting to watch how he will perform against the three-man Italian defensive wall of Francesco Acerbi, Alessandro Bastoni, and Matteo Darmian.

The midfield is very experienced Marcelo Brozovic, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Henrik Mkhitaryan, who have both defensive and attacking qualities. They should give Manchester City a challenge in midfield than Real Madrid as they have a better defensive shape and are willing to play dirty, gagging from how physical the Serie A is played. In attack, Inter Milan has insane depth featuring some of the best attackers in the World and have recently rediscovered their form. Romelu Lukaku, Lisandro Martinez, Joaquin Correa, and former Manchester City attacker Eden Dzeko provide the threat in front of the goal. They are reshuffled frequently but always deliver regardless of whoever starts. So don’t write Inter Milan off, as they have more history in the competition and will come into the final with confidence and belief regardless of the tournament favourites tag.
Inter Milan Key Player and Strenghths
Romelu Lukaku – Life has ups and downs, and the story of Lukaku presents one of the most incredible comebacks. After shutting off Chelsea for Inter Milan, a man in the trenches spent a big chunk of the season on the bench. He rediscovered his form just in time to inspire his side to the final scoring in the quarterfinals against Benfica and was lively from the bench to provide Martinez with the goal in the second leg. In his last three games, the Belgian has had four goal involvements (three goals, one assist). Despite being lively from the bench, we anticipate Inzaghi will start him in the final alongside Martinez with his speed able to threaten Manchester City on the counter where they have been vulnerable.

The Inter Milan defence – A busy day in the office for the Italian backline and their Cameroon goalkeeper, who is in contention to win the golden glove award. Inter Milan’s campaign has been established on the backbone of a solid defence. Despite conceding three times twice this tournament, they have been impressive in managing games and shutting down opponents’ strikers. On the other hand, Manchester City has a relentless attacking strategy, and with key players such as Haaland and De Bruyne in the squad, they have a tight battle to shut them down and keep the team in the game. The aerial battle, in particular, is what they have to work on, but they can’t afford to let their guard down even for a minute in the encounter.

Champions League History: City and Inter
Our next topic involves an exciting voyage through time as we explore Champions League advancements made by renowned football powerhouses Manchester City and Inter Milan. Our discussion will encompass everything from past feats up until recent accomplishments while also reflecting on successes, challenges, memorable highlights, and bitter disappointments along the way.
Manchester City Champions League History
Manchester City hopes to win their first-ever Champions League title, with their only European triumph being the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970. They beat Gornik Zabrze 2 – 1 in the final to win their first and only European competition.
Manchester City ended a run of three consecutive quarterfinal exits from 2016-17 to the 2019-20 season and reached the finals of the 2021-22 season. They lost 1 – 0 to Chelsea despite carrying the momentum into the game with massive criticism of how Guardiola set the team up for the match. They were knocked out of the semi-finals by eventual winners Real Madrid in the 2021-22 season. The Citizens had their revenge this campaign to book the final slot against Inter and will hope to have their hands on the title. The current spell in European competition is the best in the team’s history.
Milan Champions League History
City will be against Inter Milan side who have won the Champions League three times, 1964,1965, 2010 and the Europa League three times; 1991, 1994 and 1998. The back-to-back triumphs in 1964 and 1965 presented the best spell for the team in European Competition. However, inter Milan lost two finals in the 1966-67 and 1971-72 seasons. Their next final appearance was in the 2009-10 season under Jose Mourinho, where they beat Bayern Munich 2 – 0 to win the title.

2023 Champions League Final – The Referee Appointments
The 2023 Champions League final lineup will mirror the team of officials that presided over the 2022 World Cup final following the UEFA Referees Committee’s recent decision. Szymon Marciniak, the Polish referee who garnered significant acclaim for officiating at the World Cup final between Argentina and France in December, has been appointed the key official for the upcoming high-profile match between Manchester City and Inter Milan in June.
As in the World Cup final held at Qatar’s Lusail Stadium, Marciniak, 42, will be supported by his fellow countrymen, Pawel Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz. This will be Marciniak’s maiden stint as the referee in a Champions League final, despite his previous experience as the fourth official in the 2018 final between Real Madrid and Liverpool, and his recent role officiating Manchester City’s semi-final win over Real Madrid this season. Istvan Kovacs is appointed as the fourth official for the match, with Tomasz Kwiatowski taking on the role of VAR.
In other notable appointments, an all-English officiating crew will manage the Europa League final featuring Roma and Sevilla. Anthony Taylor is named as the referee, with support from assistants Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn, fourth official Michael Oliver, and Stuart Attwell, who will handle VAR duties.
The Women’s Champions League final, to be contested between Wolfsburg and Barcelona, will be under the guidance of Welsh referee Cheryl Foster. Assisting Foster will be Michelle O’Neill and Franca Overtoom, with Rebecca Welch acting as the fourth official and VAR duties assigned to Massimiliano Irrati.
Carlos del Cerro Grande, a Spanish official, is set to preside over his first significant European final, having been appointed to oversee the Conference League final showdown between West Ham United and Fiorentina. Grande, 47, will be assisted by his Spanish colleagues Pau Cebrian Devis and Guadalupe Porras Ayuso. At the same time, Jesus Gil Manzano will serve as the fourth official, and Juan Martinez Munuera will be in charge of VAR.

Inter Milan has the historic advantage, but Manchester City have been to two finals in three years.
The pain of the Chelsea defeat should drive them positively in this encounter, especially after being excited over the prospect of being favourites throughout the build-up.
Inzaghi sets his side up to play total Italian football that is rugged, aggressive, and physical which could work to their advantage in breaking off the tactical Manchester City, who have the potential to lose their cool when things don’t go their way.
Guardiola has occasionally bottled cup competitions by making changes and setting up too many plans, which backfires as the players don’t improvise when things are not going to plan.
As a result, Manchester City has the upper hand regarding squad and performance. Still, Inter will build themselves up to frustrate the Goliaths and set up for an exciting Champions League final in Turkey you can’t afford to miss.
The Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan takes place on Saturday, June 10, at 20:00. The game is on BT Sport in the UK and can be streamed using the BT Sports app.
