In the final instalment of our 2023/24 football previews, we turn our attention to the most popular league in the world, the Premier League. Manchester City will aim to retain their title but will likely face stiff competition from teams such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Chelsea. We’ll reveal the latest Premier League betting odds and the youngsters likely to shine.

The new Premier League season is almost upon us, and it promises to be an outstanding season full of drama and action-packed football games as we have been accustomed to. Betting on the Premier League is hugely popular amongst football fans at all levels.

Premier League 2023/24 – The Contenders

Manchester City and Arsenal tightly contested the Premier League last season and have the best Premier League odds to win the upcoming campaign.

We expect the two to be the top dogs in this year’s campaign, and Manchester United, who had an impressive debut season under Erik Ten Hag, have made sufficient progress to challenge this campaign’s title. Our fourth contender is a sleeping lion, Liverpool, who have been the top side alongside Manchester City in recent seasons but fell far from their best last season. They would be the most aggressive and motivated side to regain their status and challenge for the league. It would also be foolish to write off Chelsea, who, like Liverpool, had a year to forget. The last time Chelsea had no European football, they won the league. Could history repeat this season?

Manchester City

The Citizens have built a reputation for being slow starters, something they once again did in a treble-winning season. The Champions were eight points behind the leaders in March but went all the way to win their third consecutive title. The realistic objective for Manchester City next season is to chase the quadruple, with the league seemingly a formality, having triumphed in five of their previous six seasons.

Erling Haaland has been the masterpiece missing who had been missing from the puzzle. The 22-year-old scored thirty-six Premier League goals in his debut season.

They boast great depth, with the Spaniard manager relentless in his rotation to keep every player match-fit and able to get results regardless of the line-up.

Pep Guardiola’s game-changing move was deploying a revolving full-back system that saw him switch from right back into the midfield, started with youngster Rico Lewis and was perfected by John Stones.

Manchester City has depth, a top-notch striker in Erling Haaland, and a world-class manager in Guardiola; thus, it’s hard to see how they don’t win their fourth consecutive title.

Manchester City Premier League 2023/24 odds – 4/5

Arsenal

The Gunners were the most inspiring side in the Premier League last season, having started the season written off from the title race and not even predicted to be in contention for a European slot.

The London side spent two hundred and forty-eight days at the top of the Premier League, setting the record for a side to lead and not win the league. Despite being an exceptional season, they had a chance to win their first title since 2004 and developed significantly as a team.

They qualified to play in the Champions League, which would be a real test of their depth which was a pivotal reason why they didn’t win the Premier League last season. The increase in games bearing in mind the level of competition of the Champions League, where you don’t just field your second team, would be a real test for the young side.

The Premier League presents a more realistic challenge for the team, especially after last season’s achievements. We anticipate they will chase for the title from the first whistle and work on not repeating their mistakes, especially letting their guard down over three games that crippled their entire campaign.

Arsenal has a young squad featuring some of the best young talent in the league, such as Bakayo Saka (fourteen goals), Martin Odegaard (fifteen goals), and Gabriel Martinelli (fifteen goals). They have further bolstered their side with Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber, and Declan Rice. Declan Rice will be under huge scrutiny following his £105m move from London neighbours West Ham.

They have the second lowest Premier League winning odds, and the best UK betting sites expect them to challenge strongly.

Arsenal Premier League 2023/24 odds – 5/1

Liverpool

In our list of Premier League winning odds, the Reds are third, with bookmakers expecting them to improve after their disastrous performance of last season. We forget fast that just one season prior, Liverpool was the side in the quest for a quadruple and only missed out on the title by a single point, winning the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup and losing to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Last season, they drifted further from their excellence and spent a better part of the season in midtable. They, however, recovered towards the end of the season, winning nine successive games to finish fifth and qualify for the Europa League. For a club with the status of Liverpool, missing out on the Champions League is a big deal, and they would be eager to relive their best form as they have been the side that has given Manchester City dominance a real test.

Jurgen Klopp finally caved in to play Trent Alexander-Arnold, their most creative player, into a right back-midfielder hybrid, transforming their season and performances.

Klopp has been busy in the transfer market, signing Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig and World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion. As Szoboszlai is 22 and Mac Allister is 24, these are both excellent signings for a Liverpool team with an ageing squad. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Reds didn’t make more additions before the season starts.

Liverpool Premier League 2023/24 odds – 8/1

Manchester United

Erik Ten Hag had an impressive first season at Manchester United, winning the League Cup, reaching the final of the FA Cup and qualifying for Champions League football. The Dutch manager has revolutionised the team and begun leading them back to their glory days, making sufficient alterations in the squad and bringing in the right players to suit his style of play.

It wasn’t all good news, though. The Red Devils suffered humiliating defeats with the infamous 7 – 0 thrashing by Liverpool and the 4 – 0 humbling by Brentford. They further lost nine games, the most for the sides that finished in the top four. That said, they have laid the foundation, and such moments showed weaknesses that they seem to be working in the recent transfer market. The bold decision to let David De Gea leave and their intense search for a striker puts them in contention to challenge the title. There is also the Marcus Rashford effect, with the English attacker scoring seventeen goals, including scoring in nine consecutive games. Mason Mount has been brought in, which gives the manager more options in midfield, meaning the United careers of players such as Fred and Scott McTominay are in doubt.

The deal to bring in goalkeeper Andre Onana has been completed, which solves the David De Gea departure problem. The 27-year-old has been in great form for Inter and is comfortable playing out from the back, an element of play that De Gea struggled with. United’s chances of success would seemingly depend on their search for a new number nine. Rasmus Hojlund is their number one target, but Atalanta would need a fee of €65-70million to convince them to part company with the 20-year-old. The deal would be a gamble as they would be buying potential rather than the finished article. Also, the constant noise over a takeover at Old Trafford is hardly the ideal preparation for the new season.

We expect Manchester United to close the gap between them and Arsenal, and the two sides could give Manchester City real competition for the title.

Manchester United Premier League 2023/24 odds – 10/1

Chelsea

The Blues had their worst Premier League campaign finishing twelfth in the Premier League table and losing an unprecedented sixteen games. It’s hard to make an excuse for their struggles with a new American owner taking over and seemingly playing Football Manager with God mode enabled.

Chelsea let 23 players leave last season, and 23 joined or returned to the club at a net cost of over £431m. The lack of structure and clear vision saw them burn out three managers during the season, starting with their Champions League-winning manager Thomas Tuchel, Brighton’s excelling manager Graham Potter, and club legend Frank Lampard.

They have now brought in Mauricio Pochettino to bring cohesion and build the team to challenge the upcoming season after a massive transformation with numerous exits to reshape the side. Chelsea FC has made several key signings for the 2023/24 season. The club has signed Christopher Nkunku, a 25-year-old Second Striker from RB Leipzig, for a fee of £51.00m. They have also acquired Nicolas Jackson, a 22-year-old Centre-Forward from Villarreal, for £31.50m, and Ângelo, an 18-year-old Right Winger from Santos, for £12.75m.

In addition, Chelsea has brought in Diego Moreira, an 18-year-old Left Winger from Benfica B, on a free transfer. The club has also promoted Levi Colwill, a 20-year-old Centre-Back, and Lewis Hall, an 18-year-old Left-Back, from their U21 team.

Furthermore, they have signed David Datro Fofana, a 21-year-old Centre-Forward from Union Berlin, with an undisclosed transfer fee. The total expenditure on these new arrivals for the 2023/24 season is £95.20m. However, they have balanced the books somewhat with sales.

Kai Havertz, a 24-year-old Attacking Midfielder, went to Arsenal for £63.75m, and Mason Mount, a 24-year-old Attacking Midfielder, signed for rivals Manchester United for £54.57m. Mount only had a year left on his Chelsea contract, so it made sense to cash in on the academy star. Other departures include; Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City (£24.74m), Kalidou Koulibaly, to Al-Hilal (£19.55m), and Christian Pulisic, a 24-year-old Right Winger, has been transferred to AC Milan for £17.00m.

The total income from these player sales for the 2023/24 season is £216.32m, while the income from player sales is £216.32m, resulting in an overall balance of £120.72m.

However, they still seem short of an out-and-out striker, a factor in their inability to kill off games last season.

Chelsea is a difficult team to assess. Last season they struggled with so many new players, and that pattern could easily be repeated this campaign. However, they seem unlikely to be as poor as they were last season. With no European distraction, their minimum target will be the top four to claim a vital Champions League spot, which seems achievable with Pochettino in charge of the Blues.

Premier League 2023/24 – The Hopefuls

The Premier League is not only about who wins, as there will always be one winner. The battle to finish in the top four and qualify for European football occasionally takes centre stage. We highlight some sides that aren’t the renowned top six and outright favourites but could pose a real challenge for the title. Their best objective would be to shake off the normality of the table, especially in the quest for Europe featuring Newcastle United, Brighton and newly promoted side Burnley.

Newcastle

It’s a fantastic story for the Magpies since the massive financial takeover. The impressive part about Newcastle United has been their modest and strategic approach, first, bringing in Eddie Howe when they could bring in any highly profiled manager. Their recruitment has also been impressive, not contesting for big names in the industry, such as the PSG model who went for Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Lionel Messi.

Newcastle United is close to reaching an agreement to sign Harvey Barnes from Leicester City for £38m. The transfer would provide Newcastle with a replacement for Allan Saint-Maximin, who is expected to move to Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia, potentially earning Newcastle up to £40m. The deal would ease Newcastle’s Financial Fair Play concerns, and Barnes is excited about the prospect of playing in the Champions League.

Newcastle have worked on building structures in the team and improving their squad. The incentive approach of increasing players’ salaries and lucrative bonuses when they win or when a player scores have improved their performances.

Newcastle United finished fourth, securing European football for the first time in two decades and reaching the League Cup finals, showing incredible milestone accomplishments quickly. They are a force to be reckoned with in the coming few years, given that they haven’t spent as much money as was expected or made intensive recruitment, but that shows good leadership and keeps them on the right side of FFP. Early signs are they are a well-run club, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them do well in Europe.

Brighton

The Seagulls had a fantastic start to their season, winning five of their first six games that saw Graham Potter poached by Chelsea. They had an impressive attack that yielded seventy-two goals and reached the semi-final of the FA Cup. Heading to the new campaign, they can only get better with the team proving to be one of the best in scouting talents.

For instance, Kaoru Mitoma, who has seven goals and six assists, had a breakthrough season, stepping out of the shadow of Leandro Trossard, who moved to Arsenal. World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister’s departure doesn’t threaten as they have been grooming Julio Enciso, who scored a worldie against Chelsea, to take the creative role. Brighton is a force to be reckoned with; having shown their true potential last season, they could chase Champions League football this season, but any talk of challenging for the title seems far-fetched (we also said that about Leicester)!

Burnley

The team that won the Championship last season comes into the top tier with very high Premier League winning odds. The level and quality of football between the two leagues is different. Still, if Vincent Kompany can get his team playing at the same level as they did in the Championship, then the Clarets are set to be a threatening side this campaign.

They had the best attack scoring eighty-seven goals and had the best defence conceding thirty-five goals and accumulating one hundred and one points. Their possession style of play, guided by midfielders Josh Cullen and Josh Brownhill, saw them have an overwhelming possession of about seventy per cent and sometimes getting as high as eighty. They are expected to take the Premier League by storm, basing their game on the mantra that once you have the ball, the opponents can’t score, and if they can get goals as they did in the lower division, then they could be challenging for European slots.

Premier League 2023/24 – The Strugglers

The bottom half of the table is filled with intense excitement as the sides engage in a relentless battle to maintain Premier League status. So exciting is the competition that it sometimes takes centre stage from the title race and the European competition, as it did last season. Sheffield and Brentford are our picks to face the drop despite not being in the top Premier League relegation odds list. Our unique case is with Chelsea, who finished twelfth and seemingly haven’t sorted out most of their frailties heading to the new season.

Alongside identifying who might get relegated from the Premier League, we’ve also looked at the odds on getting promoted from the Championship, with former Premier League teams Leicester, Leeds and Southampton among the favourites.

Sheffield United

The Blades had a memorable campaign the last time they were in the Premier League, with victories at Bramall Lane against Spurs, Chelsea, and Arsenal. Chris Wilder finished ninth in their first season deploying lapping centre-backs that puzzled opposition who couldn’t find a solution for this strategy. Much has changed, and Sheffield United are second favourites in the Premier League, odds to be relegated in their first season.

They don’t have enough resources to boast their squad intensively compared to the teams in the Premier League, focusing more on free transfers and loan signings. The greatest hope for the Blades has players with vast Premier League experience, such as Ollie Norwood, George Baldock, and John Egan, who have been with the team throughout our relegation. The main task will be to keep Sander Berge to lead the team to success.

Brentford

During their two-year stay, the Bees have enjoyed great success in the Premier League. They, however, have to figure out a way to cope without their talisman Ivan Toney had twenty-four goal involvements (twenty goals, four assists).

Despite having an excellent rotational squad, no one can match the athletism and prowess in front of goal like Toney as an integral part of the team, especially with how they set themselves up with everyone defending and leaving the England international sailing alone in attack, but he still delivers.

They could have to commit more bodies forward, leaving them vulnerable in defence and evenly changing their strategy to accommodate Toney’s absence until mid-January. That sounds unfair on paper, but his goals gave the side notable victories, including against the champions, Manchester City.

It’s a bit of a surprise that Brentford hasn’t yet signed a forward to cover Toney. Brentford have spent £55.12m. They have signed Nathan Collins, a 22-year-old Centre-Back from Wolves, for a fee of £22.82m. They have also acquired Kevin Schade, a 21-year-old Right Winger from SC Freiburg, for £21.25m

Fulham

While it may seem strange to include Fulham in the list of strugglers after they finished 10th last season, 16 points clear of the relegation spots and just ten points shy of European places. The reason we fear for the London club is due to interest in their manager and star player from the Middle East.

Saudi Arabian club Al Ahly has offered Fulham’s manager, Marco Silva, a £40m deal for two years to become their manager. Meanwhile, Al Hilal’s interest in Aleksandr Mitrovic has led to a dispute between Fulham and the striker, who is unhappy with his club’s valuation.

Mitrovic is by far Fulham’s best player, scoring 14 league goals, which is roughly a third of all the goals Fulham scored in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old is miles ahead of his teammates in terms of goal-scoring. Carlos Vinícius and 34-year-old Willian are the team’s highest scorers behind Mitrovic, but both have only scored five in the league.

Fulham have a demanding schedule to start with. They travel to Everton for their first fixture before taking on Brentford. They then face last season’s top two, Arsenal and Manchester City away. This off-field turmoil is far from ideal preparation.

Premier League 2023/24 – Bookmaker’s Odds

Rightfully so, Manchester City (4/5), who won the title, have the best Premier League odds to win a fourth consecutive title. Arsenal, who were top of the table for a better half of the season, sit second with 5/1 odds. Liverpool (8/1), Manchester United (10/1), and Chelsea (14/1) follow closely.

The Premier League relegation odds have the newly promoted sides Luton (2/5), Sheffield United (4/5), and Burnley (11/4) as the favourites for the drop. As we saw last season, the intensity of the relegation battle means a few teams could be dragged into the scrap. Everton is one such club, who have narrowly escaped in the last two campaigns.

Youngsters to Watch

Premier League is known as a platform where future football stars, both at the national and global levels, are nurtured and grown. Arsenal, in particular, has a well-earned reputation for training and promoting young players. This is clearly demonstrated by the rise of talents such as Saka and Saliba, who are now topping our list of emerging Premier League stars. Additionally, we would like to point out two exceptional players: Ferguson, who has been instrumental in addressing Brighton’s goal-scoring challenges, and Lewis, who has significantly impressed for Manchester City.

Evan Ferguson, Brighton

The star from Bettystown has been performing exceptionally well, contributing a goal or an assist every 118 minutes on average. These statistics place him alongside legendary players such as Mohammed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne, who have an average goal involvement every 106 minutes. The Irish player, known for his team-oriented play style, has become an excellent fit for the Seagulls. As a result, their manager, Roberto De Zerbi, does not see the need for additional team reinforcements during the transfer window in order to gain more playing time. This rising star in the Premier League is predicted to have a breakthrough season, with clubs like Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester City already keeping a close eye on his progress.

Rico Lewis, Manchester City

Despite being part of an abundantly talented and deep Manchester City squad, Lewis successfully carved out a place for himself and became a key component of their season, in which they won three titles. The young prodigy played a vital role in executing Pep Guardiola’s adaptable full-back system, where he transitioned from right back into midfield. This strategy was later refined by John Stones, propelling the team’s performance during the final part of the season and leading them to victories in both the Champions League and Premier League.

William Saliba, Arsenal

When examining Rico Lewis transforming Manchester City’s season, we must highlight how William Saliba crippled Arsenal’s title hopes. The Frenchman had formed a formidable defence partnership with Gabriel, keeping them in contention for a first Premier League title for over two decades. However, the maestro was injured, and Arteta couldn’t find a solution to mitigate his absence. He is too critical for Arsenal plans that they have to keep him injury free if they are to accomplish any of their set objectives this campaign.

Bakayo Saka, Arsenal

The young talent of the Premier League made significant progress in his career last season, becoming an essential part of both Mikel Arteta’s and Gareth Southgate’s teams. Saka netted fourteen goals and provided eleven assists last season, emerging as a key player for the London-based club in their pursuit of the title. Known for his cheerful disposition and tenacity, Saka’s ability to adapt from a left-back to a right-wing position, cutting inside with his skilled left foot, has made him a more formidable and efficient player, maximising his full potential. With added support in the attack expected this season, the pressure on this young smiling assassin could be relieved, providing him more freedom to thrive on the pitch.
