Football can often be a fickle sport, and a Premier League manager’s lifespan can be short if results don’t go their way. This article assesses who is the likeliest manager to leave their post. We explore why they are in danger and what odds the bookmakers offer for them to be fired or resign.

Although the season is only halfway through, we have already seen managerial changes in the best odds for Premier League. Bournemouth’s Scott Parker was the first manager to be given his marching orders after the newly promoted side was thrashed 9-0 by Liverpool.

Bournemouth actually won their first game in their return to the top-flight, beating Aston Villa 2-0. However, they then lost 4-0 to Manchester City, and 3-0 against Arsenal before that heavy loss to Liverpool. His sacking did seem incredibly harsh, but as Boris Johnson said when he left the post of Prime Minister, “them’s the breaks”.

The next manager sacking was just as surprising. Thomas Tuchel was fired just weeks after Chelsea had spent an eye-watering £273.5m on new players, including Kalidou Koulibaly (£34m), Marc Cucurella (£62m) and Raheem Sterling (£47.5m). The season started well; Chelsea beat Everton 1-0 and had wins against Leicester (2-1) and West Ham (2-1). However, a heavy defeat against Leeds (3-0) a 2-1 loss against Southampton, but the final straw was a 1-0 shock loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League. Thomas Tuchel was sacked shortly after.

Chelsea appointed Graham Potter, meaning he resigned from his position at Brighton. It seems as though live betting sites have the work cut out keeping up with all the changes.

Update 03/10/2022 – Despite Brendan Rodgers being the bookies favourite, it was the joint-fourth favourite Bruno Lage who received his marching orders this week from Wolves. Lage was in post for 16 months at the Molineux Stadium and took Wolves to a top-half finish. However, after a 2-0 defeat at the London Stadium, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said he made the “difficult decision” to let him go. Leicester plays Nottingham Forest tonight (Monday) in what has been dubbed the ‘El Sackio’, defeat for either Rodgers or Steve Cooper could mean another sacking.

Update 26/10/2022 – We have another winner in the race to be sacked, with Steven Gerrard relieved of his duties at Aston Villa. The former Liverpool captain took over Villa in November 2021 after a successful time with Rangers, who stopped fierce rivals Celtic from claiming ten titles in a row. In the 38 games he was in charge at Villa, he won only 12 and lost 18, claiming 44 points during that time. Unai Emery has replaced him and starts in the role at the beginning of November. Emery previously had an underwhelming time at Arsenal, but he won honours at his next club, Villarreal. They won the 2022-21 Europa League trophy after beating Manchester United on penalty kicks in Gdansk, Poland.

Despite Brendan Rodgers being the favourite for the sack for most of the current season, his odds have actually lengthened in recent weeks. A 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace and wins against Leeds (2-0), and Wolves (4-0) have seen Leicester move out of the relegation spots.

The bookie’s new favourite to leave his post is Leeds United’s Jesse Marsch, who has seen his odds slashed from 11/4 to 1/3. Since beating Chelsea in August, Leeds has been in freefall, losing six of their last eight. The West Yorkshire club are in 18th, level on points (9) with Wolves and Nottingham Forest. Leeds is the only team in the Premier League who have not had a win in their last six (five losses and a draw).

Update 09/11/2022 – Despite the Leeds United manager being the favourite for the axe, it was Southampton’s Ralph Hasenhuttl who was the next out the door. Hasenhuttl took charge in December 2018 but was sacked after a 4-1 mauling at home by Newcastle United. Southampton is in the relegation zone with 12 points after 14 games. Ruben Selles will take charge until a replacement is found. Everton’s Frank Lampard is the new bookie’s favourite, and Nottingham Forest’s Steve Cooper has moved ahead of Jesse Marsch despite him signing a new contract. Long-time favourite Brendan Rodgers is now 9th favourite after turning the club’s fortunes around.

Update: 26/01/2023 – The manager of Everton, Frank Lampard, has been relieved of his duties due to a string of poor performances. The team has not recorded a win in any competition since October 22nd and currently sits in 19th place in the Premier League.

Lampard was appointed to the role just over a year ago on January 31st and guided the team to safety during his first season at the club in a fierce battle against relegation. However, this season has seen a significant decline, with only three wins in 20 Premier League games, and the team currently sits just above Southampton on goal difference.

The club officially announced Lampard’s dismissal several hours after reports of his dismissal had surfaced in the media.

In the meantime, Paul Tait and Leighton Baines will take over training responsibilities until a new manager is appointed.

Among the names being floated as potential candidates for the position is Sean Dyche, former boss of Watford and Burnley, who has a strong following among Everton supporters and a reputation for getting the most out of his players. He would also be a cheap option as he is currently without a club.

Another contender is Marcelo Bielsa, the Argentine coach known for his fast-paced and aggressive “murderball” style of play. However, it remains uncertain if this approach would be successful at Goodison Park due to the demands on individual players.

David Moyes, a former Everton and Manchester United manager, has also been mentioned as a possibility, bringing a defensive mindset to the team. However, it’s unclear if his return would be well-received by fans.

Wayne Rooney, a club and Manchester United legend, has had a mixed record in his brief managerial career, while Nuno Espirito Santo, currently in charge of Saudi Professional League club Al-Ittihad, and Ange Postecoglou, manager of Celtic, both with a 47% win rate, are also being considered.

Another option is Duncan Ferguson, a fan favourite who has served as caretaker manager for the club twice in recent years but has limited experience, with only five games under his belt. However, Ferguson appears close to taking over as manager at Forest Green.

Update 07/02/2023 – We have another winner as Leeds United’s experiment with Jesse Marsch has come to a close as the club has relieved the American of his duties as manager after a tumultuous stint of less than a year.

The final nail in the coffin came after a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, extending their winless streak in the Premier League to seven games. Currently sitting 17th in the table, only above the drop zone on goal difference, and with their last league victory coming on November 5th, the writing was on the wall for Marsch.

In addition to the manager, his entire backroom staff, including Rene Maric, Cameron Toshack, and Pierre Barrieu, have also been let go. Instead, the interim reins of the team have been handed over to Michael Skubala, Paco Gallardo, and Chris Armas, who will guide the side into battle against bitter rivals Manchester United who they play on Wednesday and at the weekend.

Marsch’s time at Elland Road will be remembered for his underwhelming win rate of 25%, with just four victories in 20 league matches and a series of draws and defeats. Despite securing safety in the previous season, the club has struggled mightily this campaign, leading to their recent spending spree in the January transfer window.

The Leeds United brass has made it clear that they hope to make a permanent appointment shortly to steer the ship back on course. The club will now begin their search for a new manager, hoping to find someone who can bring stability and success to the historic English side.

Nathan Jones is now the bookie’s favourite to be sacked. The Southampton boss was 14/1 to be relieved of his duty a few months back. He is now as low as 1/2 with some football betting sites.

In Rodgers’ first season, seven wins in a row took them to second in the table with 15 games played. They finished fifth in the 2019/20 season, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League group stage.

The following season was even better as Leicester won the FA Cup for the first time in their history, beating Chelsea 1-0 in the final. In the league, they were also flying, occupying third place for most of the season. However, Chelsea beat them 1-2 in the league, meaning they needed a result against Tottenham in their final game to qualify for the Champions League. They looked on course, winning 2-1 in the 76th minute. Then the normally reliable Kasper Schmeichel scored an own goal, and a double from Gareth Bale meant they finished fifth again and qualified for the Europa League.

This season Rodgers had been having a nightmare with Leicester at rock bottom of the league and without a win earlier in the campaign. Rodgers has gained a bit of a reputation of being the ‘Teflon’ man, as he is still in the Leicester job while other managers have left. At the time of writing this update, things are improving for Leicester and they are now in 14th place. However, are are only three points off the bottom, but Rodgers seems safe… for now!
